The Need:
More than 30,000 children in Jefferson County School District in Colorado are Title One or Gap schools and even though they receive school meals for free, on the weekends and in the summer they don't always have access to food and sometimes find the cupboard bare at home. With the rising cost of food, our program is needed more than ever and we can't do it without volunteer help.
Who we are:
We are a food distribution program for schools, section 8 apartments, libraries, rec centers, Head Start and a children's clinic that provides shelf stable food on a weekly year-round basis, including in the summer. We partner with Food Bank of the Rockies Totes of Hope Program where we receive donated food and we also purchase additional food to serve as many hungry children and families that we can.
What we do:
We Pack 400-700 bags from 9-11am on Friday mornings as a group at 1390 Brentwood Street, Lakewood, CO 80214
We rent space at Lakewood United Methodist Church where we engage in a variety of tasks on Fridays that all contribute to feeding hungry individuals, mmainly children.
Tasks include:
- Place up to 10 items into weekend food totes (400- 700 bags) to be distributed to all of our delivery sites
- Help move food that we are packing from pallets to set up for the following week
- Break down boxes, cleaning shelves or bins
Who:
We have a core group of vlunteers but also rely on Individuals, Corporate, Civic, Church or Other Groups to pack the bags and get ready for the following week's delivery of food by our volunteer drivers who deliver on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
