Beyond Babble: An Orientation/Training for New English Language and Citizenship Volunteers
Beyond Babble is the first step for anyone interested in volunteering at Project Worthmore and playing a role to support refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and other English Language Learners. For many new residents, English Skills are a critical tool for empowerment and access. As an English speaker, you have the potential to be a powerful resource.
Encountering a new language can be frustrating and fascinating, exhausting and enlightening, hilarious and humbling. As a volunteer, what can you do to help support learners through this process? What tools, resources, and best practices exist for language acquisition? What simple activities can you comfortably lead? How can you build a relationship across language barriers? At Beyond Babble, we will explore these questions and share information about our programs and current volunteer opportunities.
PLEASE NOTE: Beyond Babble is a two-part training event. This is the registration page for Part A on Nov. 10. Registration for Part B on Dec. 1, 2022 can be found at this link: https://www.helpinghabit.com/discover/12972 .
Please come ready to share your own insights and experiences and open your mind to new ones.
CURRENT NEEDS (Do they fit your schedule?)
Right now, we are seeking volunteers who can support adult English Language Learners during the 2022-2023 academic year. There are two ways to be involved.
- Participating in daytime English classes and conversation activities (held Monday-Thursday, 8:30-6:00pm).
- Meeting 1-on-1 with English Language Learners and Citizenship applicants (in-person or online) at a schedule of your choosing (including nights and weekends).
Covid: In an effort to provide a safe and healthy space for our clients and volunteers, we are currently requiring everyone who participates in our language programs to be fully vaccinated.
