Citizenship Interview Vocab Practice Session
It's well known that people applying for citizenship must answer questions about US history and government. But what's not widely known, is that their interview contains questions about their lengthy N400 application, which contains a wide variety of questions using complicated jargon and loaded phrases. If applicants are unable to define terms such as "deferred sentence", "paramilitary unit", "forced labor", "prostitution", "totalitarian", "claim to nobility", "oath of allegienace" or any of the other terms on the form, their English might be deemed insufficient.
These sessions are an opportunity for people planning on applying for citizenship to run drills on this very specific batch of vocabulary, and to build confidence though Q+A roleplay. While the subject matter ranges from bureaucratic to traumatic, these sessions will be designed to be fun, friendly, and fast-paced. Volunteers will work in small group breakouts or one-on-one sessions, as well as participate in group guessing games.
We are following standard COVID protocols. All students, volunteers, and teachers are required to wear masks during class time. We are also requiring our volunteers to be fully vaccinated. We continue to work with the refugee community on vaccine education, encouraging everyone to be vaccinated.
